DELICIOUS DIY FOOD

With all of the fabulous pubs, cafes and restaurants around The Old Piggery, Cornwall, you could be forgiven for eating out all the time. Who wants to spend time in the kitchen on holiday, after all.

But it's also great to have a more relaxed meal in our secluded garden, away from the hustle and bustle or to take a picnic to the beach. Here are a few easy and delicious options to try.

Hassle-free seafood feast

When right by the sea it's rude not to tuck into some delicious seafood. It couldn't be easier. For delicious crab or lobster just walk up the drive to Camel Fish - take a discount voucher from the kitchen drawer with you. Just across the delivery yard you'll see a little portacabin where you can order freshly prepared crab or lobster to take away, there and then, or to pop back and collect later in the day.

Just a couple of minutes away on the Rock road you can find the co-op and deli where there is a great selection of wine, salad and other accompaniments and the bakers will supply some delicious crusty bread.

Or for other types of seafood, check out the fishmongers on the left along the Rock road.

BBQ

The butchers on the Rock road is full of great meat - either as it comes, or already marinaded and prepared as kebabs. Just waiting to be thrown on the BBQ in the Old Piggery's garden. Wash it down with some Cornwall Doom Bar beer direct from the brewery...conveniently located just two minutes away in the trading estate on the left on the Rock road. They do tastings there too. Rude not to!

Pasty fest

Cornwall is renowned for its pasties and some of the best are to be found at Choughs award-winning pasty shop in Padstow. The meat pasties here are reportedly the best. My son follows his 'main course' meat pasty with a rhubarb, apple and custard pasty from another pasty shop nearby! Then sit on the harbour wall and tuck in, whilst you watch the fishing boats. There are also some delicious ice-creams to follow, from the ice-cream shop on the harbour if a double pasty hit is too much!

Beach picnic

Filling the picnic hamper couldn't be easier. Barnecutts, the baker on the Rock road, not only serves plenty of delicious bread and filled rolls and sandwiches but has bowls of mixed takeaway salads, dips and more that are perfect for a picnic. And the deli and co-op can fill in with anything else you fancy. Or, if you are over on the Padstow side, you can pick up some delicious seafood treats from Rick Stein's deli - and some sweet treats from Rick Stein's patisserie! Told you it was nick-named Padstein!

Ready-meals Rock style

Fancy a meal in but don't want the cooking hassle? Barnecutts, the bakers, has a fridge full of homecooked ready meals to rival your own home-cooking. Just stick them in the oven, open a bottle of wine and a bag of salad and job done!

Takeaway - too easy!

You can't go without fish and chips on a beach holiday! Rick Stein's fish and chip place in Padstow often has a long queue, for good reason. But there is also a good and convenient chip-shop on the Rock road. And, conveniently located in the same trading estate as the Doom Bar brewery is Jaws Pizza. See the leaflet in the Piggery kitchen. They do a great range of freshly made pizza and a few alternatives. They can deliver but it's only a two minute drive to collect.
